Cafe Royale

No froth, no filter, just a shot of artistic magic as Royal Family fan paints portrait of Kate and William using coffee

At first glance, Karen Elan's portrait of Prince William looks like just another well-painted version of Mario Testino's engagement snaps.

But this is a sepia-toned tableau with a twist - or rather a kick - as caffeine-junkie Karen used coffee rather than paint to create the picture.

She spent days making the masterpiece and is so proud of it that she posted the A3 canvas to Clarence House in time for the Royal Wedding this Friday.

Karen, 37, said: 'It was so much fun painting it. It took a long time but it was definitely worth it.

'I have been into prince and princess stories since I was a little girl and this is a real life love story of a girl who met her prince.

The artist said: 'A lot of people want to buy the picture from me but there is no way I am selling it'

'They look so happy together and that is what I wanted to come across in the picture. They just look like a normal happy couple like everyone else who can't wait for their wedding day.

'I'm sure they are swamped with gifts but this one is a little bit different and I think they will like it.

'I hope they are both big fans of coffee.'

Finished product: Karen usually recreates art classics like the Mona Lisa but made an exception for the young royals

Caffeine kick: Karen has recently started painting using chocolate and Guinness too
